Best Resume Format for Freshers in India (2026 Guide)
Every year, lakhs of graduates apply for the same entry-level openings — and most send resumes that look identical: a florid objective, a table of academic marks, a list of college subjects, and a declaration with the date and place. Recruiters at TCS, Infosys, Accenture and every startup in between have seen that resume ten thousand times.
Here is the best resume format for freshers in India in 2026 — one page, ATS-safe, and built around the only question a recruiter has about a fresher: can this person learn fast and do real work?
The format: one page, six sections
With no work history, a fresher resume is one page. Anything longer signals padding. The order:
1. Header
Name, city, phone, professional email (yourname@gmail.com — not coolboy2003@), LinkedIn, and GitHub or portfolio link if you are targeting IT jobs in India. No photo, no date of birth, no father's name — modern Indian recruiters, and every ATS, do fine without them, and multinational employers actively prefer their absence.
2. Summary (not an objective)
Kill the objective. "To work in a challenging environment where I can utilise my skills…" says nothing. Write 2–3 lines of substance:
"B.Tech (CSE, 2026) with hands-on Python and SQL from three built-and-deployed projects, including a hostel mess-management app used by 400 students. Seeking a backend developer role."
Specific beats ambitious, every time.
3. Skills
8–12 concrete, testable skills. "Python, SQL, Git, REST APIs, Pandas" — not "hardworking, team player, quick learner". This section is what the ATS matches against the job posting, so mirror the posting's exact words. Before applying anywhere, paste the job description and your resume into our free job-match checker and add the keywords you are missing (only the ones that are true).
4. Projects — your work experience substitute
This is the section that gets freshers shortlisted, and most write it worst. One line about "a website using HTML CSS" is invisible. Format each project like a job:
- What + tech: "Built a mess-management web app (Flask, PostgreSQL, deployed on Render)"
- Scale or outcome: "adopted by the hostel office; handles 400 daily users"
- Your specific part, if it was a team project: "designed the database schema and built the payment-tracking module"
Two or three projects done at this depth beat eight one-liners. Internships, freelance gigs and college-fest tech teams go here too — real work is real work.
5. Education
Degree, college, year, CGPA (include it if it is 7+; leave it out otherwise — never lie). Class 12 and 10 in one line each, percentages only if strong. Drop the marks table — tables break ATS parsing and waste a third of your page.
6. Certifications & achievements
Only ones that signal ability: NPTEL courses with good scores, AWS/Google cloud fundamentals, hackathon wins and ranks, published work. Not "participated in" items.
And delete the declaration ("I hereby declare that the above information is true…"). It is a relic — no recruiter reads it, and it eats two lines of your one page.
Why ATS matters even more for freshers
Mass recruiters screen fresher applications almost entirely by software — a human may never see a resume the ATS scores poorly. The rules:
- Single column. The trendy two-column templates with a coloured sidebar are the #1 fresher mistake — many ATS read them as scrambled text.
- No tables, text boxes, icons or graphics (skill "star ratings" parse as nothing).
- Standard headings: "Education", "Projects", "Skills".
- Export as .docx or a text-based PDF, and name the file "Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf".
