Remote Jobs in USA from India: How to Actually Get Hired

There is a version of working for a US company that involves no visa lottery, no relocation, and no waiting: doing it from India. Remote jobs in USA companies open to international candidates have grown into a genuine career path — engineering, design, data, marketing, support and back-office roles all hire this way. But "remote" hides several very different arrangements, and your resume has to show a US employer that hiring you across 10.5 time zones is a solved problem, not an experiment.

The three arrangements (know which one you are applying for)

  • Independent contractor — the most common. You invoice the company (typically monthly, in USD), handle your own Indian taxes and GST obligations where applicable, and get no US benefits. Simple for the employer, flexible for you.
  • Employer of Record (EOR) — the company hires you through a platform (Deel, Remote.com, Rippling and similar) that legally employs you in India. You get a proper Indian employment contract, INR or USD salary, and statutory benefits; the US company gets compliance. Increasingly the default at funded startups.
  • Freelance/project work — Upwork, Toptal, contra-style platforms. A real income source and a proven on-ramp: many full-time remote contracts start as a freelance project done well.

If a posting says "US only" or "must be authorized to work in the US", it means payroll is US-only — skip it and move on; volume matters more than persuasion.

Where the real jobs are

  • Job boards built for this: We Work Remotely, RemoteOK, Wellfound (startups), Himalayas, and LinkedIn with location filters set to "Remote" + checking the posting allows international applicants
  • The platforms' own job feeds: Deel and Remote.com list roles at companies already set up to hire internationally — the sponsorship question is pre-solved
  • US startups' careers pages: "remote (global)" or "remote (±4h ET overlap)" in a posting is the green light
  • Your existing network: a large share of international-remote hires come through someone who has seen your work — open-source contributions, technical writing, and a public portfolio pull real weight here

Red flags, because remote hiring attracts scams: any "job" asking for a registration fee, equipment deposit, or crypto payment; interviews conducted entirely over chat; offers without a single video call. Legitimate remote employers run normal interview processes.

Positioning your resume for remote

A US-format resume (one page, no photo, quantified — full rules in our USA resume guide) with three remote-specific additions:

1. Solve the logistics in the header

Replace the city line with the answer to their first question: "Bengaluru, India — contractor or EOR; 4+ hours daily overlap with US Eastern time." That single line moves you from "complicated" to "ready".

2. Prove async competence

Remote teams run on writing. Evidence beats claims:

  • "Wrote the team's API documentation and onboarding runbook (cut new-hire ramp time from 4 to 2 weeks)"
  • "Led incident retros across IST/PST time zones for a 14-person distributed team"
  • "RFC-driven development: authored 6 accepted design docs"

If you have worked with US or European clients in any capacity — services company, agency, freelance — say so explicitly with the time zones named.

3. Make your work inspectable

Remote hiring is higher-trust, so employers verify harder: a live GitHub, a portfolio site, published writing, or a detailed LinkedIn matching your resume word-for-word. Our free ATS checker confirms the resume itself parses cleanly — remote-friendly companies use the same Greenhouse/Lever stack as everyone else, and the JD-match tool shows your keyword gap per posting.

Money, taxes and the practical bits

  • Rates: research the company's band, not Indian CTC conventions. International-remote rates for Indian engineers commonly land well above Indian salaries while below Bay Area ones — that arbitrage is exactly why companies hire this way. Quote monthly USD for contracts.
  • Getting paid: Wise, Payoneer, or direct SWIFT; EOR platforms handle it for you.
  • Taxes: contractor income is taxable in India as business/professional income (presumptive schemes may apply) — one consultation with a CA who handles foreign-remittance clients is worth far more than internet forums.
  • The overlap question: most US teams want 3–4 hours of shared time. IST evenings map to US East Coast mornings — say explicitly which hours you commit to.

A realistic path

  1. US-format resume, remote-positioned header, async evidence in the bullets
  2. Portfolio/GitHub cleaned up and linked
  3. 15–20 targeted applications/week on international-friendly boards, keyword-matched with the JD tool
  4. A freelance project or two as proof-of-work if applications stall
  5. CA consultation once the first contract lands
