Resume for Skilled Trades: Carpenters, Electricians & Technicians

A resume written like a corporate one does a skilled tradesperson no favors. Employers hiring carpenters, electricians, plumbers, or technicians are looking for specific tools, safety compliance, and a track record of finished work, not vague "responsibilities."

1. Name your specific trade skills and tools

"Skilled in carpentry" tells an employer nothing. "Experienced in framing, cabinetry, and finish carpentry using table saws, routers, and CNC equipment" tells them exactly what you can do on day one. Do the same for any trade: name the actual tools, materials, and techniques.

2. Lead with licenses and safety certifications

Electricians, plumbers, and many technician roles require specific licenses or safety certifications such as OSHA, electrical licensing, or HVAC certification. Put these near the top — they are often the first filter an employer applies before reading further.

3. Quantify jobs completed, not just years of experience

"5 years of experience" is weaker than "completed 120+ residential wiring installations with zero safety incidents" or "renovated 40+ kitchens on schedule and within budget." Numbers around jobs finished, timelines met, or safety record carry real weight.

4. Show range: residential, commercial, or industrial

Employers often need to know the scale and setting you have worked in. If you have handled both residential and commercial jobs, or worked on larger industrial sites, spell that out — it changes what roles you are a fit for.

5. Mention equipment maintenance and troubleshooting

For technicians especially, employers care about your ability to diagnose and fix problems, not just install. A line about diagnosing and resolving a specific type of equipment failure shows judgment, not just labor.

6. Keep it simple — this industry rarely uses ATS, but clarity still wins

Most trades hiring is still done by a person reading quickly, often on a phone. Skip decorative templates, use clear headings such as Experience, Certifications, and Skills, and put your strongest, most specific line first.
